2009 american gold eagle bullion coins were released on December 3, 2009 and quickly sold out. 2009 gold eagle coins surely made a history with leading sales figures, despite late launch and supply of the smallest size depleted the very next day. Every time I go check US Mint web site, it says "Production of United States Mint American Eagle Gold Proof and Uncirculated Coins has been temporarily suspended because of unprecedented demand for American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins. Currently, all available 22-karat gold blanks are being allocated to the American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin Program, as the United States Mint is required by Public Law 99-185 to produce these coins in quantities sufficient to meet public demand . . . "

Finally, at the end of the year, specifically in December, 2009, 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle will be available to general public.

The history of this coin is unique. Because of the vast quantities of gold coming out of the mines in California, two new denominations were authorized by Congress to be struck in gold; the $1 and mammoth $20. Prior to this, only the $2.50, $5.00 and $10.00 denominations were struck in gold. Congress passed the bill in 1849 and by 1850, the new coins, designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, hit circulation. Longacre used a similar design for both the one dollar and $20 coins: A handsome woman’s head with a classic Greco-Roman nose. It’s believed Longacre even used his daughter as the model! She is wearing a pearl-bordered coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” The reverse of the coin is based on the Great Seal of the United States. It depicts a spread Eagle with a shield on its breast, 13 stars in an oval with rays above.
