The coin is 22 karat gold and is composed of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. This gold alloy combination makes the gold Krugerrand more durable than other gold bullion coins. The durability factor was an important consideration when designing the coin as it was intended to be circulated and had to be resistant to scratches and dents.

The most popular version of the coin, the 1 ounce size, weighs approximately 1.09 troy ozs, is 2.84 mm thick, and measures 32.77 mm in diameter. In 1980, three smaller varieties also became available, each containing one half ounce, one quarter ounce, and one tenth ounce of gold, respectively.

The front side (obverse) of the Krugerrand features the face of the 5^th president of the South African Republic, Stephanus Jonannes Paulus Kruger. The name of the coin was actually derived from Kruger's surname and the Rand, which is the official currency of South Africa. Also inscribed on the obverse side in capital letters are the words "Afrikaans" and the English version, "South Africa."

The back side of the coin (reverse) features a picture of the South African National symbol, the springbok or antelope specie. At the top of the coin, is the inscription of the word, KRUGERRAND, the coin's name. At the bottom, inscribed in both English and Afrikaans is the Krugerrand's gold content. If the coin happened to be the one ounce variety, the inscription would be, "FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD."

Because of the remarkable success of the South African Gold Krugerrand, other foreign countries such as the U.S., Canada, and Australia began to mint their own gold bullion coins. Canada was the first to do so in 1979 when it released the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

Collectors can also obtain the coin in proof edition, but they are more expensive than the regular bullion variety. Unlike many of the other bullion coins, such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle, which are also produced in silver, Krugerrand gold coins are only available in gold. Beware of any websites offering these fake silver versions!

On its initial year of debut, the2006 American Buffalo gold coin was valued at approximately 800 US dollars. Currently, the now famous coin has a face value of about 50 US dollars. This is due to the fact that in 2005 the Presidential One Dollar Coin Act was enacted and responsible for the production of this gold proof coin by requiring a coin be made with a face value of 50 US dollars and a content of 1 oz of 24-karat gold. Only 300,000 of these 2006 American Buffalo gold coins were ever minted. Furthermore, the government enforced another limit of only 10 coins per household allowed which instantly made them a highly sought after collector's item.

At the front of the coin you can see a picture of a Native American Indian. The head is facing the right side and he also has a feather on the top of his head. Imprinted on the upper right corner of the gold coin is the word "Liberty" and the date, that the coin was minted, can clearly be seen on the lower left side where his shoulder is. A little known fact about the model that was used for the 2006 gold coin by the artist James Fraser is that he actually had 3 different Native Indian Chiefs pose for him while he was in the process of designing the gold coin. The names of these three Native Indian Chiefs were Iron Tail, Big Tree, and Two Moons. James Earl Fraser borrowed features from all 3 of these great chiefs to complete his intricate design of the American Buffalo gold bullion coin.

On the flip side of the gold coin is a picture of an American Bison which did not require more than one model. History claims that the actual model was a Bison named Black Diamond located in the acclaimed New York City Central Park. Eye witnesses claim that the artist James Fraser had to have a person distract the Bison to make sure the animal was in the correct side position pose rather than just have the Bison face a completely different direction. Because of the incredible demand, recognition and investment value of the original Indian Head nickel, the American Buffalo gold bullion coin was born.

This gold bullion coin was conceived so that it could compete with foreign 24 karat gold bullion coins. Because countless investors prefer 99.99 percent pure American Buffalo gold proof over the 91.67 percent gold used in the also popular American Gold Eagle, many were choosing other countries gold coins to meet their bullion needs. Production at the Royal Mint stopped in 1917, although some were minted again in 1925. The branch mints continued to produce sovereigns, Ottawa in Canada until 1919, Bombay in India in 1918, Sydney Australia until 1926, Melbourne and Perth Australia until 1931, and Pretoria South Africa until 1932.

No new sovereigns were issued for circulation until 1957, although sovereigns were included in the George VI proof set of 1937 which was available for collectors, and sovereigns were also minted but not issued for Edward VIII in 1937, and for Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

From 1957, bullion sovereigns were issued almost every year until 1968, then not until 1974 when regular production was restarted. In 1979, an annual proof version was issued, and this practice continues to the present. In 1989, a special 500th Anniversary commemorative design was produced, inspired by the very first gold sovereign of 1489, showing H.M. Queen Elizabeth II seated facing on a throne.

For 2002, a shield was used on the reverse for just one year to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee, and then the design reverted to the classic St. George slaying the dragon by Pistrucci.

Collectible Quarters

Minting quarters whose reverse designs spotlighted each of the 50 states has been in practice since 1999. •    Latex gloves – your body oils can damage gold coins. It’s best not to touch them without gloves
•    Airtight display containers or cases – Airtight containers will protect your gold coins from outside pollutants and come in ring frames, boxes and albums.
•    Coin envelopes and cardboard or Mylar holders, if you are not using air tight containers. Make sure they are acid-free.

Gold itself, has carried with it throughout history a romantic lure and reverence that goes along with it's monetary value. It's value by weight is a measure of the real wealth and stability of national currencies worldwide. Almost every country's paper money has been devalued over time and many have become completely worthless, except for precious metals such as silver and gold.

The unique and amazing precious metal cannot be created by man, nor can it be destroyed or altered in any way. It has remained one of the most valuable liquid investments with no geographical boundaries. Gold can be bought, sold, traded and stored in many different parts of the world. Naturally, gold coins from almost any country are also bought and sold frequently and are a good investment for many. Gold is still the foundation of the current monetary system and one of the most stable forms of currency or wealth.

At one point in time in the US, prior to and up until 1933, all paper bills minted were backed in full by gold reserves. Today, our paper currencies are backed by nothing more than a mere promise of their value by the government.

But gold coins are always going to retain their value and possibly increase over time, depending on the rarity and age of the particular coins and the number of coins made of a particular issue.

Another popular aspect of gold coin collecting is the Mexican Peso. When it comes to Mexican coin collecting, of particular importance is one's ability to identify Mexican peso gold coins. This will ensure he is actually getting genuine coins to add to his growing coin collection.

The Mexican peso coins were first introduced in the 1920s and were originally made to celebrate the independence of Mexico. One of the first coins made was a Centenario. The coins were about 90% gold with 10% copper to make the coin more durable and long lasting.

If you are starting out as a coin collector, the Mexican gold peso is a good place to start and they are still among the most popular gold coins to collect along with other gold coins including the American eagle gold coins. The Mexican peso had a figure of a winged goddess of victory holding a laurel wreath and with the other hand, she held chains. The feminine figure stood in front of two volcanoes, which were the Iztacchautl and Popcatepetl, both of which are volcanoes located in Mexico.

Other than the most popular Mexican 50 Peso coins, many collectors also enjoy collecting the smaller denomination coins including the 20 Peso gold coin, the 5 Peso coin and both the 2.5 and the 2 Peso gold coins as well.

The history of this coin is unique. Because of the vast quantities of gold coming out of the mines in California, two new denominations were authorized by Congress to be struck in gold; the $1 and mammoth $20. Prior to this, only the $2.50, $5.00 and $10.00 denominations were struck in gold. Congress passed the bill in 1849 and by 1850, the new coins, designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, hit circulation. Longacre used a similar design for both the one dollar and $20 coins: A handsome woman’s head with a classic Greco-Roman nose. It’s believed Longacre even used his daughter as the model! She is wearing a pearl-bordered coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” The reverse of the coin is based on the Great Seal of the United States. It depicts a spread Eagle with a shield on its breast, 13 stars in an oval with rays above.
