American Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Set values are scorching hot. So much so that some collectors who originally purchased one solely for their collection are now considering letting it go. With the profits, some say, a few bills can be paid with money still left over for other coins. On the flip side, many collectors have commented that they will never let theirs go.

The United States Mint sold the American Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Set for $299.95. After they sold out, prices quickly doubled. The fervor, in part, led to a temporarily hiatus as eBay halted set auctions until sellers had physical possession of the sets. Now that they are shipping, several hundred auction listings are again on eBay.

More about the set. The first layer of packaging for the set involved a navy blue sleeve with the US Mint’s logo and description in silver print, ‘AMERICAN EAGLE 25TH ANNIVERSARY SILVER COIN SET’. Inside the sleeve is a navy blue rectangular outer box with the same United States Mint logo and writing on its top lid. This outer box feels like a specially coated cardboard box and has one unattached side that makes removal of the set much easier.

The 2011 Proof Silver Eagle with the ‘W’ mint mark has a finish that is specially designed for collectors. The carefully sculpted foreground images on both sides of the coin are frosted so that they stand out against the highly polished mirror-like background surface. This type of engraving technique creates a very dramatic cameo effect.

This collector piece celebrates the national forest located in the state of Oregon, which is just one of the fifty-six national sites the America the Beautiful coin series will honor through the years.

Designed and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the coin’s reverse or tails side showcases a scene of Lost Lake and Mount Hood, the home of twelve glaciers. The obverse bears John Flanagan 1932 portrait of George Washington.

Mount Hood National Forest takes its name from the massive volcano found within the park’s boundaries. The mountain itself was named after British Admiral Samuel Hood in 1792. However, the Native Americans of the region had known it as Wy’east for centuries before that.

The national forest received its current name and status in 1924, however it was known as Oregon National Forest for sixteen years before that. It consists of over 1 million acres and receives over 4 million annual visitors. A large reason for so many visitors is the fact that the forest is located only an hour’s drive from the large city of Portland, Oregon.

The giant panda, or panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca, literally meaning "black and white cat-foot") is a bear native to central-western and south western China. It is easily recognized by its large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. Though it belongs to the order Carnivora, the panda's diet is 99% bamboo.

The panda is a conservation reliant endangered species. A 2007 report shows 239 pandas living in captivity inside China and another 27 outside the country. Wild population estimates vary; one estimate shows that there are about 1,590 individuals living in the wild,[9] while a 2006 study via DNA analysis estimated that this figure could be as high as 2,000 to 3,000.

While the dragon has historically served as China's national emblem, in recent decades the panda has also served as an emblem for the country. Its image appears on a large number of modern Chinese commemorative silver, gold, and platinum coins.
The giant panda has a body shape typical of bears. It has black fur on its ears, eye patches, muzzle, legs, arms and shoulders. The rest of the animal's coat is white. Although scientists do not know why these unusual bears are black and white, some speculate that the bold coloring provides effective camouflage in its shade-dappled snowy and rocky surroundings. The giant panda's thick, wooly coat keeps it warm in the cool forests of its habitat. The giant panda has large molar teeth and strong jaw muscles for crushing tough bamboo.

During the 1950's through the early 1970's and possibly even later than that, untold numbers of these beautiful coins were dipped white by dealers because toning was considered undesirable thus reducing the number of beautiful and unique examples out there. For those who have just one spot in their set reserved for that unbelievable coin they will cherish and never sell, monster toned Morgan dollars typically are the ones that the collector keeps after selling everything else.

How Morgan Dollars Toned

Morgan Silver Dollar, produced from 1878 until 1904 and again in 1921 were in heavy supply and many more were struck than were required for circulation. Freshly struck examples were stored at the US Treasury in canvas bags until they were eventually released or sold to the public during the GSA (General Services Administration). Other hoards, including the Battle Creek and the Continental Bank Hoard produced many incredibly toned coins as well. These coins sat in canvas bags for nearly a century. During that time, the coins closest to the canvas of the bag or near the top of the bag were constantly bombarded by a minute concentration of sulfur. Sulfur was infused in the canvas bags in an attempt to reduce the damage caused by rats chewing on them. The silver reacted with the sulfur to form a thin film of silver-sulfide on the surface of the coins, which reflects and refracts the light so that we see the colors of the rainbow on the coins surface.

The coin is 22 karat gold and is composed of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. This gold alloy combination makes the gold Krugerrand more durable than other gold bullion coins. The durability factor was an important consideration when designing the coin as it was intended to be circulated and had to be resistant to scratches and dents.

The most popular version of the coin, the 1 ounce size, weighs approximately 1.09 troy ozs, is 2.84 mm thick, and measures 32.77 mm in diameter. In 1980, three smaller varieties also became available, each containing one half ounce, one quarter ounce, and one tenth ounce of gold, respectively.

The front side (obverse) of the Krugerrand features the face of the 5^th president of the South African Republic, Stephanus Jonannes Paulus Kruger. The name of the coin was actually derived from Kruger's surname and the Rand, which is the official currency of South Africa. Also inscribed on the obverse side in capital letters are the words "Afrikaans" and the English version, "South Africa."

The back side of the coin (reverse) features a picture of the South African National symbol, the springbok or antelope specie. At the top of the coin, is the inscription of the word, KRUGERRAND, the coin's name. At the bottom, inscribed in both English and Afrikaans is the Krugerrand's gold content. If the coin happened to be the one ounce variety, the inscription would be, "FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD."

Because of the remarkable success of the South African Gold Krugerrand, other foreign countries such as the U.S., Canada, and Australia began to mint their own gold bullion coins. Canada was the first to do so in 1979 when it released the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

Collectors can also obtain the coin in proof edition, but they are more expensive than the regular bullion variety. Unlike many of the other bullion coins, such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle, which are also produced in silver, Krugerrand gold coins are only available in gold. Beware of any websites offering these fake silver versions!

The obverse of the coin bears the same George Washington portrait as depicted on circulating America the Beautiful Quarters. Unlike the quarters that have a reeded edge, however, the 5 ounce pieces have edge letters of .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE.

Known to the Blackfeet as the "Backbone of the World," Glacier National Park preserves more than 1 million acres of forests, alpine meadows, lakes, rugged peaks and glacially carved valleys in the Northern Rocky Mountains. These lands were first set aside as a national reserve on February 22, 1897.

Inscriptions include HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS, 2010 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. It was designed by Don Everhart and engraved by Joseph Menna.

The obverse features a restored portrait of George Washington created by John Flanagan in 1932.

On its initial year of debut, the2006 American Buffalo gold coin was valued at approximately 800 US dollars. Currently, the now famous coin has a face value of about 50 US dollars. This is due to the fact that in 2005 the Presidential One Dollar Coin Act was enacted and responsible for the production of this gold proof coin by requiring a coin be made with a face value of 50 US dollars and a content of 1 oz of 24-karat gold. Only 300,000 of these 2006 American Buffalo gold coins were ever minted. Furthermore, the government enforced another limit of only 10 coins per household allowed which instantly made them a highly sought after collector's item.

The American Buffalo gold coin design was inspired from the well known Indian Head nickel, which was originally created in 1913 by James Earl Fraser. There were very minute changes made to the original nickel. For example, some of the mound of earth below the buffalo's hooves were decreased to give it a cleaner look. The conception of the Indian Head nickel is widely known as one of the most attractive creations to ever be used on any US government minted gold proof coins.

At the front of the coin you can see a picture of a Native American Indian. The head is facing the right side and he also has a feather on the top of his head. Imprinted on the upper right corner of the gold coin is the word "Liberty" and the date, that the coin was minted, can clearly be seen on the lower left side where his shoulder is. A little known fact about the model that was used for the 2006 gold coin by the artist James Fraser is that he actually had 3 different Native Indian Chiefs pose for him while he was in the process of designing the gold coin. The names of these three Native Indian Chiefs were Iron Tail, Big Tree, and Two Moons. James Earl Fraser borrowed features from all 3 of these great chiefs to complete his intricate design of the American Buffalo gold bullion coin.

On the flip side of the gold coin is a picture of an American Bison which did not require more than one model. History claims that the actual model was a Bison named Black Diamond located in the acclaimed New York City Central Park. Eye witnesses claim that the artist James Fraser had to have a person distract the Bison to make sure the animal was in the correct side position pose rather than just have the Bison face a completely different direction. Because of the incredible demand, recognition and investment value of the original Indian Head nickel, the American Buffalo gold bullion coin was born.

This gold bullion coin was conceived so that it could compete with foreign 24 karat gold bullion coins. Yellowstone National Park, located mostly within Wyoming, shares the same designs as the companion five ounce bullion version and circulating America the Beautiful Quarter. The investment grade bullion coin was released on December 10, 2010, as a part of United States Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins Program.

The reverse or tails side of the uncirculated coin depicts Old Faithful geyser with a mature bull bison in the foreground. Inscriptions on the reverse are YELLOWSTONE, WYOMING, 2010 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The design, developed in consultation with representatives of Yellowstone National Park, was created and sculpted by Don Everhart.

Now, here is a bit of history about these beautiful gold coins. In 1816, there was a major change in the British coinage, powered by the Industrial Revolution. The Royal Mint acquired powerful new steam powered coining presses designed by Matthew Boulton and James Watt. The reverse design was introduced featuring Saint George slaying a dragon, designed by a brilliant young Italian engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci. This beautiful classic design remains on gold sovereigns today, almost two hundred years later.

Production at the Royal Mint stopped in 1917, although some were minted again in 1925. The branch mints continued to produce sovereigns, Ottawa in Canada until 1919, Bombay in India in 1918, Sydney Australia until 1926, Melbourne and Perth Australia until 1931, and Pretoria South Africa until 1932.

No new sovereigns were issued for circulation until 1957, although sovereigns were included in the George VI proof set of 1937 which was available for collectors, and sovereigns were also minted but not issued for Edward VIII in 1937, and for Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

From 1957, bullion sovereigns were issued almost every year until 1968, then not until 1974 when regular production was restarted. In 1979, an annual proof version was issued, and this practice continues to the present. In 1989, a special 500th Anniversary commemorative design was produced, inspired by the very first gold sovereign of 1489, showing H.M. Queen Elizabeth II seated facing on a throne.

For 2002, a shield was used on the reverse for just one year to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee, and then the design reverted to the classic St. George slaying the dragon by Pistrucci.

One of the platinum bullion mintage is the platinum Eagle coins. Un-circulated American Platinum Eagle coins are all struck at the United States West Point Mint in New York. Although normally none of the un-circulated pieces carry mintmarks there was an exception that occurred in 1999 when the one-tenth ounce and quarter ounce proof dies bearing the 'W' mint mark were prepared by mistake. These 1999-W un-circulated coins are extremely scarce and avid collectors have them at the top of their want lists.

Each American Platinum Eagle coin is guaranteed to contain the exact quantity of platinum stamped on the coin and they meet the rigid quality standards set by the United States Mint. The obverse side features the powerful and striking image of "Lady Liberty" looking off into the future symbolizing vigilance, faithfulness to duty, and the American spirit and character. It was designed and engraved by United States Mint sculptor and engraver John M. Mercanti, who also designed the reverse side of the American Silver Eagle Coin. This astonishing coin bears the inscription "Liberty" and the mottoes, "In God We Trust" and "E Pluribus Unum" also on the obverse along with the date of issue. Within the curving exergue side at the bottom of the coin is the face value, and the West Point "W: mint mark is also located on the obverse side.

On the reverse the design features a bald eagle soaring across a setting sun in different regions of America changing each year. Watching over our firm foundation of democracy is the bald eagle our Nation's symbol of power, courage, and freedom, which was shown in different designs between the years of 1998 and 2002 known as the "Vistas of Liberty" series. America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins will be duplicates of the standard circulating America the Beautiful Quarters, with the exception of their size and ".999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE" edge letterings. Circulating quarters have a reeded edge — 119 reeds in total, and a diameter of 0.955 inches, or 24.26 millimeters. They weigh just 5.670 grams.

Each America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin will:

* have a 3.0 inch diameter versus 0.955 inches for the quarters;weigh 5.0 ounces as compared to the weight of

* 11.340 grams in each quarter;have a composition of .999 fine silver versus the cupro-nickel metals in quarters;

* have incused into the edge the fineness and weight of the bullion coin as compared to the reeded edge of a quarter.

The five quarter-dollars this year that will be replicated in design include:

2010 Hot Springs National Park Quarter for Arkansas,

2010 Yellowstone National Park Quarter for Wyoming,

2010 Yosemite National Park Quarter for California,

2010 Grand Canyon National Quarter Park for Arizona, and

2010 Mount Hood National Quarter Forest for Oregon

Sometime these coins are referred to as "2010 5 oz quarters" as they resemble design of National Parks Silver Quarter Sets. But don't confuse them - 5 oz silver coins are similar in design only and not actual silver weight.

Collectible Quarters

Minting quarters whose reverse designs spotlighted each of the 50 states has been in practice since 1999. Boy Scouts Silver Dollar Designs
The obverse or heads side of the Boy Scout coin contained the images of three youth members of the Scouting organization: a Cub Scout, a female Venturer and a Boy Scout. Each were shown in their full uniform while giving a salute. Around the scouts were found the inscriptions: CONTINUING THE JOURNEY, 1910, 2010, IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. It was designed by Donna Weaver and engraved by Charles Vickers.
 
Jim Licaretz engraved the universal emblem of the Boy Scouts of America which was featured on the reverse. Surrounding the emblem were the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, BE PREPARED, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DOLLAR.
 
The National Boy Scouts of America Foundation will receive a total of $3.5 million, as each silver dollar sold included a $10 surcharge for the "extension of Scouting in hard to serve areas."

Platinum eagle coins were struck at the Mint’s facility at West Point and release was limited to a mintage of only 8,000. The obverse on this year’s Platinum features the first of six annual designs dedicated to the six principles of the Preamble of the United States Constitution.

The 2009 reverse theme depicts "To Form a More Perfect Union" by using four faces to represent the diversity of the Nation with interweaving hair and clothing. It was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

The obverse side remains unchanged, featuring Lady Liberty along with the inscriptions "LIBIERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the year.

New element added this year is an American Eagle "privy mark," based on an original "coin punch" identified at the United States Mint at Philadelphia.

Selling the American Eagle gold coin is really simple than buying and selling gold bars. The 1 troy ounce coin possesses a face value of $50. The other three denominations are divided accordingly. A 1 troy ounce American Eagle gold coin can be bought for about $1000 while the 1/2 ounce for about $550. On the other hand, the 1/4 ounce is for about $275 then the 1/10 ounce for about $130.

As mandated by law, all of the gold created as  American Eagle gold coins should come from America. The United Congress authorized each coin.  Every coin is also approved by the US Mint. This is why undoubtedly nearly everyone recognizes it.

Beginners contemplating of buying coins should definitely take into account purchasing the American Eagle gold coins. This coin is especially harmless because of the backing of an entire government and its international recognition, making it reasonably easy to sell. Moreover, with the assay certificate behind it, there's no way anyone could turn down this gold coin.

1. Collect precious metal coins – silver and gold coins are great not only as collector items, but also as an investment. Paper money value decreases with the time, while silver and gold continue to rise.

6. Make sure to collect graded and certified coins. Far too often, I see eBay auction advertising extra fine coin. For newbie collector, it may sound great, but in reality “extra fine coin” condition is not what you are after. Look for BU and MS-grade coins, if available.

Native to central and eastern South America, the Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), or Hyacinthine Macaw, is the largest macaw and the largest flying parrot species in the world, though the flightless Kakapo of New Zealand can outweigh it at up to 3.5 kg.

In terms of length it is larger than any other species of parrot. While generally easily recognized, it can be confused with the far rarer Lear's Macaw. Their popularity as pets has taken a heavy toll on their population in the wild. Birds in captivity fetch a price of around $9,000-$12,000 US.

Gold itself, has carried with it throughout history a romantic lure and reverence that goes along with it's monetary value. It's value by weight is a measure of the real wealth and stability of national currencies worldwide. Almost every country's paper money has been devalued over time and many have become completely worthless, except for precious metals such as silver and gold.

The unique and amazing precious metal cannot be created by man, nor can it be destroyed or altered in any way. It has remained one of the most valuable liquid investments with no geographical boundaries. Gold can be bought, sold, traded and stored in many different parts of the world. Naturally, gold coins from almost any country are also bought and sold frequently and are a good investment for many. Gold is still the foundation of the current monetary system and one of the most stable forms of currency or wealth.

At one point in time in the US, prior to and up until 1933, all paper bills minted were backed in full by gold reserves. Today, our paper currencies are backed by nothing more than a mere promise of their value by the government.

But gold coins are always going to retain their value and possibly increase over time, depending on the rarity and age of the particular coins and the number of coins made of a particular issue.

Another popular aspect of gold coin collecting is the Mexican Peso. When it comes to Mexican coin collecting, of particular importance is one's ability to identify Mexican peso gold coins. This will ensure he is actually getting genuine coins to add to his growing coin collection.

The Mexican peso coins were first introduced in the 1920s and were originally made to celebrate the independence of Mexico. One of the first coins made was a Centenario. The coins were about 90% gold with 10% copper to make the coin more durable and long lasting.

If you are starting out as a coin collector, the Mexican gold peso is a good place to start and they are still among the most popular gold coins to collect along with other gold coins including the American eagle gold coins. The feminine figure stood in front of two volcanoes, which were the Iztacchautl and Popcatepetl, both of which are volcanoes located in Mexico.

Coin collecting or numismatics is an extremely popular hobby which is now affordable to everybody. You can delve into the wonderful world of coin collecting as you read these words by simply reaching in your pocket and finding loose change. So what are the key steps necessary to begin a coin collection?

Step 1: Decide What You Want To Collect

You need to decide what type of collection you want to build. There are many different types of coin collection themes. These include;

Country Collections

- Some collectors obtain a sample from every country while others focus on 1 country

Year Collections

- Many collectors collect by year e.g. one Lincoln cent for every year from 1909 to present

Mintmark Collections

- Different mint marks can provide adequate differentiation to collect multiple samples for each year

Type Collections

- A collection may include major design variants for a period of time in a particular country

Subject Collections

- Many collectors collect coins that depicts an area of personal interest e.g. planes, ships etc. Other collection categories include; period collections, composition collections, signature collection, series collections, printed value collections, volume collections and more.

Step 2: Educate Yourself on Your Selection

It is very important to educate yourself sufficiently. Join your local numismatic club, contact your local coin dealer and ask them for good sources from which you can learn about the hobby. This information is important in order to understand what you need to consider when buying a coin, and how to value a coin. An excellent resource is the 'American Numismatic Association'. This association will provide information on dealers and entities that promote coin collecting. Visit your local library or Amazon.com and get books pertaining to Numismatics.

Step 3: Complete a Set

Complete a set. Collect one of each year and mint mark of your coin of choice. (A mint mark tells you where the coin was made.)

Step 4: Subscribe to Coin Publication

Subscribe to coin publications such as "Coin World" or "Coinage Magazine." These publications will keep you up to date on developments and ensure you make more informed decisions.

Step 5: Get a Collectors Display Album

Pick up a collector's display album or folder to proudly show off your new found hobby. Other useful coin collecting materials include; coin capsules, coin magnifiers, coin envelopes, coin scales, coin carrying cases and coin trays.
