How Morgan Dollars Toned

Morgan Silver Dollar, produced from 1878 until 1904 and again in 1921 were in heavy supply and many more were struck than were required for circulation. Freshly struck examples were stored at the US Treasury in canvas bags until they were eventually released or sold to the public during the GSA (General Services Administration). Other hoards, including the Battle Creek and the Continental Bank Hoard produced many incredibly toned coins as well. These coins sat in canvas bags for nearly a century. During that time, the coins closest to the canvas of the bag or near the top of the bag were constantly bombarded by a minute concentration of sulfur. Sulfur was infused in the canvas bags in an attempt to reduce the damage caused by rats chewing on them. The silver reacted with the sulfur to form a thin film of silver-sulfide on the surface of the coins, which reflects and refracts the light so that we see the colors of the rainbow on the coins surface.

The coin is 22 karat gold and is composed of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper. This gold alloy combination makes the gold Krugerrand more durable than other gold bullion coins. The durability factor was an important consideration when designing the coin as it was intended to be circulated and had to be resistant to scratches and dents.

The most popular version of the coin, the 1 ounce size, weighs approximately 1.09 troy ozs, is 2.84 mm thick, and measures 32.77 mm in diameter. In 1980, three smaller varieties also became available, each containing one half ounce, one quarter ounce, and one tenth ounce of gold, respectively.

The front side (obverse) of the Krugerrand features the face of the 5^th president of the South African Republic, Stephanus Jonannes Paulus Kruger. The name of the coin was actually derived from Kruger's surname and the Rand, which is the official currency of South Africa. Also inscribed on the obverse side in capital letters are the words "Afrikaans" and the English version, "South Africa."

The back side of the coin (reverse) features a picture of the South African National symbol, the springbok or antelope specie. At the top of the coin, is the inscription of the word, KRUGERRAND, the coin's name. At the bottom, inscribed in both English and Afrikaans is the Krugerrand's gold content. If the coin happened to be the one ounce variety, the inscription would be, "FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD."

Because of the remarkable success of the South African Gold Krugerrand, other foreign countries such as the U.S., Canada, and Australia began to mint their own gold bullion coins. Canada was the first to do so in 1979 when it released the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

Collectors can also obtain the coin in proof edition, but they are more expensive than the regular bullion variety. Unlike many of the other bullion coins, such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle, which are also produced in silver, Krugerrand gold coins are only available in gold. Beware of any websites offering these fake silver versions!

Coins in these series honor national parks and other national sites located within the U.S. and its territories. By law, the quarters will run at a rate of five issues per year until the final release in 2021. That makes for 56 unique reverse designs.

Hot Springs 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin features a reverse that depicts the facade of the Hot Springs National Park headquarters building with a fountain in the foreground. Inscriptions include HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS, 2010 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. It was designed by Don Everhart and engraved by Joseph Menna.

The obverse features a restored portrait of George Washington created by John Flanagan in 1932.

On its initial year of debut, the2006 American Buffalo gold coin was valued at approximately 800 US dollars. Currently, the now famous coin has a face value of about 50 US dollars. This is due to the fact that in 2005 the Presidential One Dollar Coin Act was enacted and responsible for the production of this gold proof coin by requiring a coin be made with a face value of 50 US dollars and a content of 1 oz of 24-karat gold. Only 300,000 of these 2006 American Buffalo gold coins were ever minted. Furthermore, the government enforced another limit of only 10 coins per household allowed which instantly made them a highly sought after collector's item.

At the front of the coin you can see a picture of a Native American Indian. The head is facing the right side and he also has a feather on the top of his head. Imprinted on the upper right corner of the gold coin is the word "Liberty" and the date, that the coin was minted, can clearly be seen on the lower left side where his shoulder is. A little known fact about the model that was used for the 2006 gold coin by the artist James Fraser is that he actually had 3 different Native Indian Chiefs pose for him while he was in the process of designing the gold coin. The names of these three Native Indian Chiefs were Iron Tail, Big Tree, and Two Moons. James Earl Fraser borrowed features from all 3 of these great chiefs to complete his intricate design of the American Buffalo gold bullion coin.

On the flip side of the gold coin is a picture of an American Bison which did not require more than one model. History claims that the actual model was a Bison named Black Diamond located in the acclaimed New York City Central Park. Eye witnesses claim that the artist James Fraser had to have a person distract the Bison to make sure the animal was in the correct side position pose rather than just have the Bison face a completely different direction. Because of the incredible demand, recognition and investment value of the original Indian Head nickel, the American Buffalo gold bullion coin was born.

This gold bullion coin was conceived so that it could compete with foreign 24 karat gold bullion coins. One of the platinum bullion mintage is the platinum Eagle coins. Usually the mintage coins either platinum, silver or gold has their own regular versions of coins in all denominations, proof version of the coins in all denomination and as well as the collectible uncirculated versions of the coins in all denominations.

Figures are marked with asterisk and the numbers are based on recent sales data. Some is with unaudited US mint sales data where in it differs from the final figures when released by the US mint.

For the collector coins, it is available in 4 coins sets where in the number of the coins sold in the set is reflected in individual mintage data. Example in the 2007 half ounce, the proof platinum eagle number includes sales figures which is the 10th anniversary platinum eagle set but that is stated separately.

The one-ounce has a diameter of 32.7mm, a thickness of 2.39mm, a weight of 1.0005 troy ounce, and contains one troy ounce of pure .9995 fine platinum with a face value of $100, the highest face value of any American coin ever produced and recently priced at $2,299.95.

The half-ounce platinum American Eagle coin has a diameter of 27mm, a thickness of 1.75mm, a weight of 0.5003 troy ounce, and contains a half-ounce of pure platinum, and has a face value of $50. The quarter-ounce platinum coin has a diameter of 22mm, a thickness of 1.32mm, a weight of 0.2501 troy ounce, and contains a quarter-ounce of pure platinum, and has a face value of $25. The tenth-ounce platinum coin has a diameter of 16.5mm, a thickness of .95mm, a weight of 0.10005 troy ounce, and contains a tenth-ounce of pure platinum and has a face value of $10.

Gold itself, has carried with it throughout history a romantic lure and reverence that goes along with it's monetary value. It's value by weight is a measure of the real wealth and stability of national currencies worldwide. Coin collecting or numismatics is an extremely popular hobby which is now affordable to everybody. You can delve into the wonderful world of coin collecting as you read these words by simply reaching in your pocket and finding loose change. So what are the key steps necessary to begin a coin collection?

Step 1: Decide What You Want To Collect

You need to decide what type of collection you want to build. There are many different types of coin collection themes. These include;

Country Collections

- Some collectors obtain a sample from every country while others focus on 1 country

Year Collections

- Many collectors collect by year e.g. one Lincoln cent for every year from 1909 to present

Mintmark Collections

- Different mint marks can provide adequate differentiation to collect multiple samples for each year

Type Collections

- A collection may include major design variants for a period of time in a particular country

Subject Collections

- Many collectors collect coins that depicts an area of personal interest e.g. planes, ships etc. Other collection categories include; period collections, composition collections, signature collection, series collections, printed value collections, volume collections and more.

Step 2: Educate Yourself on Your Selection

It is very important to educate yourself sufficiently. Join your local numismatic club, contact your local coin dealer and ask them for good sources from which you can learn about the hobby. Subscribe to coin publications such as "Coin World" or "Coinage Magazine." These publications will keep you up to date on developments and ensure you make more informed decisions.

Step 5: Get a Collectors Display Album

Pick up a collector's display album or folder to proudly show off your new found hobby. Other useful coin collecting materials include; coin capsules, coin magnifiers, coin envelopes, coin scales, coin carrying cases and coin trays.
