Authorized by Congress in 1792, the United States Mint is our country's exclusive producer of legal tender coins. It's main mission is to generate an adequate quantity of circulating coinage for the United States to conduct its commerce and trade. The United States Mint also manufactures proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins, including Gold Congressional Medals and platinum, silver and gold bullion coins.

Among the most popular coins that are put out by the Mint are the coins that are produced for it's American Gold, Silver and Platinum Eagle Coin Programs. From the time of it's initial release back in nineteen-eighty-six, it's four sizes, the one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and one-tenth ounce denominations have developed into the world's most widely traded and highly regarded gold bullion coins. They are sought after by coin collectors worldwide and recognized as one of the finest purchases that a potential bullion investor or coins collector can possibly make.

The attractive and classic design of the American Gold Eagle coin is showcased in the graceful Striding Liberty Coin, which was first created by Augustus Saint Gaudens for the United States Double Gold Eagle. The reverse displays a nest that contains a female American eagle with her hatchlings, suggestive of the strength and security of the American family.

The American Gold Eagle is considered to be among one of the best options for both new and experienced gold bullion investors, as these are the only bullion coins guaranteed for weight, content, and purity by the United States government. Currently, only gold that is mined here in America is used in the production of the coin.

Because of the record demand for this past year for American Eagle Coins, the United States Mint suspended the manufacture of the uncirculated and proof editions of these coins in 2009. The remaining coin blanks have instead been allocated to the American Gold Eagle coin program as stated by Public Laws 99-61 and 99-185. Both laws direct the agency to produce these coins in numbers sufficient to satisfy public demand. The uncirculated and proof versions of the American Eagle Gold and Silver Proof Coins are currently not required by any law.

The Mint is working diligently with it's current manufacturers of coin blanks to step up the stock of coin bullion blanks, so that it can offer to the public the proof and uncirculated editions of gold, silver and platinum American Eagle coins next year. Collectors and precious metals investors alike will be eagerly awaiting any further announcements on the situation in the coming months.

James Kirkwood is is a longtime coin collector, who's interests include collecting Gold Proof Eagle Coins, and also Gold Proof Eagle Sets. These beautiful coins can make an excellent addition to an investment portfolio that includes precious metals, making a perfect compliment to traditional stocks and bonds.

If you are a beginner looking to collect United States gold coins, and also passionate to learn more about the United States history, this is for you. The American Eagle gold coin is a notable place to begin with. If you're previously collecting coins, and are seeking for yet another attractive coin to add up to your collection, check out the American Eagle.

Selling the American Eagle gold coin is really simple than buying and selling gold bars. Bars are by now on the go , but they wind up toting up wait times and additional expenses if you want aim for the assay certificate. This official document guarantees the legality of the bar. The American Eagle gold coins don't require that unnecessary time and money. The assaying system is indeed not that complicated. Moreover, the American Eagle gold coin is non-reportable since the government is supporting all transactions of these coins. Gold investors aim towards these American Eagles to invest than to report.

In 1986, the US Mint first embarked on minting and issuing the American Eagle gold coins after being encouraged by the Saint-Gauden $20 coins from 1907 to 1933. The model of eagles, a national symbol, is one of the main grounds why this American coin is an acknowledged gold investment among the many available gold selections. This is also due to the assurance that America and the US Mint bear what makes the American Eagle coins renowned worldwide.

This gold coin comes in four denominations: 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 troy ounce. It is a 22 karat coin, crafted from 91.67% pure gold. This is the measure for every American gold coins. The 1 troy ounce coin possesses a face value of $50. The other three denominations are divided accordingly. A 1 troy ounce American Eagle gold coin can be bought for about $1000 while the 1/2 ounce for about $550. On the other hand, the 1/4 ounce is for about $275 then the 1/10 ounce for about $130.

As mandated by law, all of the gold created as American Eagle gold coins should come from America. The United Congress authorized each coin. Every coin is also approved by the US Mint. This is why undoubtedly nearly everyone recognizes it.

Beginners contemplating of buying coins should definitely take into account purchasing the American Eagle gold coins. This coin is especially harmless because of the backing of an entire government and its international recognition, making it reasonably easy to sell.

Coin collecting is a fascinating hobby, but do you know where to start, what to collect and simply how to build your collection so that it will increase in value over the time? I hope tips below will help you to make right choices from the beginning.

1. Collect precious metal coins – silver and gold coins are great not only as collector items, but also as an investment. Paper money value decreases with the time, while silver and gold continue to rise.
2. Morgan silver dollars are among most popular silver coins to collect. They have huge historical value and some strikes such as Carlson City (CC Morgans) command premium prices of several hundred and thousand dollars.
3. Gold eagles are popular gold coins to collect. These coins have a long history dating back to 19 century. Modern bullion eagles are well designed and stroked in uncirculated and proof condition.
4. You may want to consider collecting worldwide coins. Canadian coins have great designs and variety of denominations. Australian coins quickly catching up on world market and offer state of the art fascinating designs. Chinese silver and gold coins also very popular and have great resell value.
5. Low mintage coins are in huge demand among coin collectors, and increasing in price faster than may any other coins in your collection.
6. Make sure to collect graded and certified coins. Far too often, I see eBay auction advertising extra fine coin. For newbie collector, it may sound great, but in reality “extra fine coin” condition is not what you are after. Look for BU and MS-grade coins, if available.

I hope these tips help you to decide how to build your coin collection. For more coin collections post, please visit Coin Collections home page.

Your gold coin collection is one of your favorite things to display and show off, not to mention an investment. Because of the pride factor and the investment factor, it’s important to keep your collection in perfect condition. That’s part of collecting valuable objects. If you are a new gold coin collector and unsure about what you need to keep your collection in top-notch shape, here are the supplies you’ll need:

• Gold coin cleaner – Now before you go out and purchase something that calls itself coin cleaner, remember gold can very easily be damaged. Abrasives, harsh chemical and lots of rubbing will damage your gold coins. If you must, clean them in warm soapy water and pat dry with a gentle cloth – that’s your gold coin cleaner.
• Latex gloves – your body oils can damage gold coins. It’s best not to touch them without gloves
• Airtight display containers or cases – Airtight containers will protect your gold coins from outside pollutants and come in ring frames, boxes and albums.
• Coin envelopes and cardboard or Mylar holders, if you are not using air tight containers. Make sure they are acid-free.

The key with keeping your gold coins in perfect condition is to protect them at all costs. Protect them from light, heat, air and your own hands. If you do this, your gold coin collection will stay pristine for years to come.

Gold has historically been a treasured and enduring commodity. It has been lusted after and collected, seized by tyrants and pirates and the like for centuries. It's color and beauty are unequaled. It has forever been admired, molded, minted and worn as a symbol of wealth, stature.

Gold itself, has carried with it throughout history a romantic lure and reverence that goes along with it's monetary value. It's value by weight is a measure of the real wealth and stability of national currencies worldwide. Almost every country's paper money has been devalued over time and many have become completely worthless, except for precious metals such as silver and gold.

The unique and amazing precious metal cannot be created by man, nor can it be destroyed or altered in any way. It has remained one of the most valuable liquid investments with no geographical boundaries. Gold can be bought, sold, traded and stored in many different parts of the world. Naturally, gold coins from almost any country are also bought and sold frequently and are a good investment for many. Gold is still the foundation of the current monetary system and one of the most stable forms of currency or wealth.

At one point in time in the US, prior to and up until 1933, all paper bills minted were backed in full by gold reserves. Today, our paper currencies are backed by nothing more than a mere promise of their value by the government.

But gold coins are always going to retain their value and possibly increase over time, depending on the rarity and age of the particular coins and the number of coins made of a particular issue.

Another popular aspect of gold coin collecting is the Mexican Peso. When it comes to Mexican coin collecting, of particular importance is one's ability to identify Mexican peso gold coins. This will ensure he is actually getting genuine coins to add to his growing coin collection.

The Mexican peso coins were first introduced in the 1920s and were originally made to celebrate the independence of Mexico. One of the first coins made was a Centenario. The coins were about 90% gold with 10% copper to make the coin more durable and long lasting.

If you are starting out as a coin collector, the Mexican gold peso is a good place to start and they are still among the most popular gold coins to collect along with other gold coins including the American eagle gold coins. The Mexican peso had a figure of a winged goddess of victory holding a laurel wreath and with the other hand, she held chains. The feminine figure stood in front of two volcanoes, which were the Iztacchautl and Popcatepetl, both of which are volcanoes located in Mexico.

Other than the most popular Mexican 50 Peso coins, many collectors also enjoy collecting the smaller denomination coins including the 20 Peso gold coin, the 5 Peso coin and both the 2.5 and the 2 Peso gold coins as well.

The historical and romantic Carson City Morgan silver dollar is also lovely to look at and a pleasure to hold. If you’re searching for one of these unique coins for your collection – or simply because you love it – there are some facts you should know to avoid falling victim to a fake.

Carson City, Nevada – a true Wild West town -- utilized the silver strike of 1859 to mint CC Morgan dollars. Like other Morgan dollars, the CC Morgans display the face of Liberty on the front and an eagle on its reverse side. Also on the reverse side is the double C (Carson City) mark which sets it apart from other Morgan dollars.

Be sure to consider the following tips before you purchase a CC Morgan silver dollar:

Carson City Morgans should be evaluated carefully before purchasing to be sure it isn’t a fake.

Purchase CC Morgans from a reputable dealer. Some online coin auctions are trustworthy, but be sure you do your homework before you buy.

Take into account the CC Morgan’s condition before you purchase it. Even though the coin may be listed as rare, its condition may reduce the value.

Find out how many CC Morgans of the type you’re considering are uncirculated. Sometimes an uncirculated grading doesn’t warrant an increased price.

During some years millions of CC Morgans were minted, while in other years only a few hundred thousand were minted – making some rarer than others.

CC Morgan silver dollars are considered among the most collectible of coins and adding them to your collection should be considered a privilege.

Coin Collecting is affectionately known as the 'Hobby of Kings' in reference to the fact that in ancient times only Kings could afford to collect coins as lay people spent every penny they had to survive.

Coin collecting or numismatics is an extremely popular hobby which is now affordable to everybody. You can delve into the wonderful world of coin collecting as you read these words by simply reaching in your pocket and finding loose change. So what are the key steps necessary to begin a coin collection?

Step 1: Decide What You Want To Collect

You need to decide what type of collection you want to build. There are many different types of coin collection themes. These include;

Country Collections

- Some collectors obtain a sample from every country while others focus on 1 country

Year Collections

- Many collectors collect by year e.g. one Lincoln cent for every year from 1909 to present

Mintmark Collections

- Different mint marks can provide adequate differentiation to collect multiple samples for each year

Type Collections

- A collection may include major design variants for a period of time in a particular country

Subject Collections

- Many collectors collect coins that depicts an area of personal interest e.g. planes, ships etc. Other collection categories include; period collections, composition collections, signature collection, series collections, printed value collections, volume collections and more.

Step 2: Educate Yourself on Your Selection

It is very important to educate yourself sufficiently. Join your local numismatic club, contact your local coin dealer and ask them for good sources from which you can learn about the hobby. This information is important in order to understand what you need to consider when buying a coin, and how to value a coin. An excellent resource is the 'American Numismatic Association'. This association will provide information on dealers and entities that promote coin collecting. Visit your local library or Amazon.com and get books pertaining to Numismatics.

Step 3: Complete a Set

Complete a set. Collect one of each year and mint mark of your coin of choice. (A mint mark tells you where the coin was made.)

Step 4: Subscribe to Coin Publication

Subscribe to coin publications such as "Coin World" or "Coinage Magazine." These publications will keep you up to date on developments and ensure you make more informed decisions.

Step 5: Get a Collectors Display Album

Pick up a collector's display album or folder to proudly show off your new found hobby. Other useful coin collecting materials include; coin capsules, coin magnifiers, coin envelopes, coin scales, coin carrying cases and coin trays.
