$20 Gold Liberty S-Mint Double Eagle

$20 Gold Liberty S-Mint Double EagleOne of the most prestigious and affordable large gold U.S. coins in our nation’s history is the Liberty Head $20 Gold Double Eagle. It was minted from 1850 to 1907 — an amazing span of 57 years. Perhaps the best examples of this marvelous coin are those struck at the famous San Francisco Mint. We’ve uncovered a small hoard of these golden beauties and we’re making them available while our supply lasts. Each bears the famous “S” mint mark and has been graded in MS61 Brilliant Uncirculated condition — remarkable considering their age.

The history of this coin is unique. Because of the vast quantities of gold coming out of the mines in California, two new denominations were authorized by Congress to be struck in gold; the $1 and mammoth $20. Prior to this, only the $2.50, $5.00 and $10.00 denominations were struck in gold. Congress passed the bill in 1849 and by 1850, the new coins, designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, hit circulation. Longacre used a similar design for both the one dollar and $20 coins: A handsome woman’s head with a classic Greco-Roman nose. It’s believed Longacre even used his daughter as the model! She is wearing a pearl-bordered coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” The reverse of the coin is based on the Great Seal of the United States. It depicts a spread Eagle with a shield on its breast, 13 stars in an oval with rays above.
